Local Churches, Lampstands in the Darkness

For the last week or so, I have been meditating on the first several chapters of the book of Revelation.  One thing that has stood out to me is the high regard that our Lord Jesus Christ has for the church.  I am not talking about the Church universal, but the local church.  We see Jesus, in His glory, the first and the last, the living One, who has the keys of death and of Hades, whose voice is like the sound of many waters, walking among seven golden lampstands.  These lampstands are the local churches to whom this book of Revelation is written. Do we realize that Jesus sees local churches as lampstands in this world of darkness?  Do we know that an angel has been assigned to each of these lampstands?  Do we know that Jesus is imparting grace and peace to these churches?  All this is found in this first chapter of the book of Revelation.

If Jesus sees the local church as precious, and holy, and full of purpose, why is it that so many “followers of Jesus” view the church with disdain or apathy?  Why is it that so many are really not a part of a local church?  Some think that “attending church” is being a part of the church.  That is one of the most deceptive and destructive lies that is currently circulating among Christians today.  The church, according to Scripture, is not a building.  It is not a time slot on Sunday morning.  It is not an organization.  It is not just a teaching or worship point in our busy week.  The church is a group of followers of Jesus whose lives are being knit together in Christian agape love.  These followers are pursuing a oneness of mind and purpose together.  They are actively helping one another grow in their spiritual walks.  They are not perfect; but they are seeking to become like Him.

Have we made ourselves a part of a local church that Jesus sees as holy and precious and burning brightly as a lampstand?

Koinonia: The Worker and Sound Doctrine I

Tonight at our Koinonia Gathering, I am beginning a three part study on “The Worker and Sound Doctrine”.  For those not a part of Immanuel Fellowship (Frisco), the Koinonia is the group of workers here at the church.  It consists of those committed to serving in the church, and committed to serving with one another (and serving to one another).  We meet twice a month. Once a month, we divide into English speaking and Spanish speaking groups.  On this occasion we take time to talk among ourselves, pray for people, and encourage one another.  Then we also meet all together once a month.  That is what we are doing tonight.  Including all the children, we will be over 50 people.

Anyway, tonight I will begin our study on the importance for the worker to be “constantly nourished” (I Timothy 4:6) on sound doctrine.  Actually, over the next three months, we will look at ten admonitions Paul gives to either Timothy or Titus on this topic.  This evening we will look at I Timothy 4:6, I Timothy 6:3-4, and II Timothy 1:12-13.  Among other things, we will be defining what exactly is sound doctrine.  Personally, I am very excited about what we will be covering, and I pray that we all will be strengthened and motivated to be better students of God’s Word.

This is be recorded into a podcast format, and will be available on our website and facebook page.  Everyone is encouraged to listen into this study!

Today is our last day of this designated Week of Prayer and Fasting.  Let’s pray for the Sunday Celebration coming up tomorrow.  May the Lord prepare our hearts for all that He has for us.  May all of us be ministered to through the worship, time in God’s Word, and sharing.

Come prepared to share a little something of what God has been speaking to you this week.

We begin our new series tomorrow called “Letting Our Light Shine.”  Let’s pray that He will use this set of messages in all of us… and this is an excellent opportunity to invite others!

First Spanish Koinonia

Last night we had our first-ever Spanish Koinonia.  It was basically an introduction to the new way we are doing the Koinonia.  There were a few people there who had never been part of our group of workers before.  I think everyone went away from tonight feeling very envisioned.

We talked about the importance of the core of the church being consistent in their walks with Jesus and in coming to the Sunday meetings.  In many ways the group of workers serves as a bridge between the pastors and the rest of the church.  People may write off what the pastors say because they think, “Well, you’re the pastor, of course you have enough faith to live for Jesus.”  However, if people in the church see others around them living for Jesus, it makes everything seem more accessible.

A church can’t be run by the pastor’s influence alone, but by all of us encouraging each other forward.  If we are all awake to our responsibility as core members of the church, then there are more of us to see the needs of others, to pray, and to encourage.

Don’t Give Up

There is a temptation that strikes at times when we slip-up. It’s an aftershock of having given in to a previous temptation and sinned. The aftershock temptation goes something like this: ‘Now I’ve gone and blown it. I’ve failed. What a trainwreck I’ve caused!’ And then conclude, ‘I may as well give up since I’ve stopped living righteously. It doesn’t matter anymore’, plunging ourselves into a worse condition. This is an attitude of self-serving arrogance. What we’re really saying is, ‘Since I won’t take this to God, I’ll just live to satisfy myself.’

I think it’s easy to get sucked into this type of temptation and is a bad idea to toy with these sorts of thoughts. Why were we so unhappy about the fall in the first place? Were we trying to please God or ourselves? Throwing off the righteousness of God, having a pity-party or going around blungeoning ourselves doesn’t please God.

One of our Christian brothers whom you may know, Philip, reminded me a little over a week ago, “..without faith, it is impossible to please God.” It is a quote taken from Hebrews 11:6. Here’s the rest of it: “because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”

The choices we make matter. The best thing we can do is to trust God’s Word and earnestly seek Him. Let us run, ASAP, to the Lord in humility and confess whatever sin was commited against Him. Then, our relationship with Him may be restored as He shelters and upholds us. And our strength is renewed.

May we go about singing and shouting things of excellence, like these words from Psalms 73:28 that David wrote:

“But as for me, God’s presence is my good. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, so I can tell about all You do.”
